Board Games

A board game is any type of game that is played on a marked surface (board). In addition to the board, there are usually pieces that are used to move across the board in various ways, depending on the game being played. There are literally thousands of board games. Some are simple and considered family entertainment, while others are intricate and involve a plan or strategy in order to win.
Although board games have been played in most cultures since the earliest civilizations, they became widely popular during the early 20th century with the rise of the middle class who had time to spend and money to burn. Board games can be described in two basic categories – luck and strategy. Most children’s games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders are based on luck. Games like Monopoly and Risk are based on both luck and strategy. For example, in Monopoly you wish for luck when you shake the dice to land on a good piece of property for sale. Then you must think strategically to decide whether or not it is worth purchasing or investing more money in. Chess, on the other hand, is a game of pure strategy.
There is also a certain amount of diplomacy involved in many board games. Games involving three or more players can involve diplomacy whereby players convince other players to team up with them, make deals, etc.
Many board games are now being replaced with computer games. For example, the option to play Scrabble online and compete with other players is a popular example. There are hundreds of sites that offer hundreds of board games for young and old alike. As a matter of fact, the success of online computer games has led to a serious decline in board game sales.

If You Play Arcade Games, Here are Some Tips to Play Games Online

For the last few years, the only games my sons would play online were arcade games. I have to admit that these games are quite interesting, and if I was lucky enough to have some free time, which I did have some back then, I would sit with them while they played and get quite involved myself. Though I don’t have as much time for that anymore, those will always be some of my favorite memories with my sons.
The thing about arcade games is that they are very intense. My sons would often get very worked up about the games, and that was perhaps most of the fun of it. The world inside that game is very real while you are playing it, and it would often seem like that was all there was to think about. Though arcade games are pretty common, there are only so many that can be considered very good. Everyone likes something different anyway, so there is something out there for everyone.
You do have to be careful when you play arcade games however, as they can be quite addictive. If you have any sort of work to do, you should do it before you play arcade games. My sons would get lost for hours in their online games, and there were a few times when my oldest son would almost forget to go to work. This can happen with any online game though. I know a few that I play have sucked away more time than I realized. It would seem the arcade games are the worst though.
If you are looking for some great arcade games to play, you might want to find some reviews first to see what you might want to try. You can find these all over the internet, and you can usually find tips and tricks to help you along if you have no idea what you are doing. Some of these games are more expensive, and it’s hard to know what you will like and what just won’t work for you. You might also try free online games with someone you know to save a little money on buying new games.

Classic Arcade Games

Arcade game companies started springing up in the 1960’s and have been growing ever since. The games have gotten a little smaller but with better graphics over the years.
It is one of the fastest growing business’s to have ever hit the market in history. It is a very profitable industry and the technology is endless.
The graphics of arcade games were very basic in the beginning. Without macromedia flash software or java sun plugging everything was kept very simplistic.
There were very limited games in the beginning and they swayed toward the humorous genre.
Today you can find classic arcade games on the internet. You can even find them at game stores where they have been modified to be played on current game systems.
Games have changed so much over time that looking back on what they use to be is almost scary. With today’s limitless multiplayer games, and 3D games compared to 2D games that only allowed 1-2 players there is obviously a huge difference.
You can play a game on your home television or on your home computer now, but back then you had to play in the local soda shop because the games were so big. Home games didn’t really happen until 1970’s.
It’s always fun to revisit the past and play games that your parents and grandparents were playing back then. There are even games out there from your own childhood. Who can forget classic Mario brothers? There is so much fun to be had in the simplistic classic arcade games of the past and now you can enjoy them in your own home!

Classic Arcade Games

The new millennium is the millennia of PC games. But before PCs became a household phenomenon, the only games of its kind that kids knew, and a whole generation of Americans have grown up playing, were arcade games.
Arcade games consist of a simple, yet bulky machine, with a colorful screen, and some sticks or buttons to play with, and a device to put coins in, which allows the game to be played for a particular period of time.
Today, you can find arcade games that run on computers, using emulators. But before that had happened, arcade games were typically found, apart from the especial entertainment centres and video arcades, in restaurants, malls and movie halls. Kids and grown ups alike played mainly three types of arcade games: the famed pinball, video games or redemption games.
Yet, the ancestry of arcade games could be traced to the hugely popular games commonly known as the "amusement park midway games" like ball toss game and shooting galleries which were popular at the beginning of the 20th century.
The 1930s saw the first coin-operated pinball machines. Though being made of wood with all functions mechanical rather than electronic and being a far cry from the electronic ones that were to come much later, they were still quite a hit. The late seventies would see these mechanical pinballs being replaced by electronic games.
The change in fortunes of arcade games happened with the formation of a company called Atari in 1972. This company created the coin-operated machines, beginning with the electronic ping pong game, called Pong. Pong was a huge hit, and led to even more home video game systems being introduced onto the market.
Many games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders became huge hits in the late seventies and early eighties, paving the way to a revolution. The last breath to the arcade games was provided by the emergence of two player fighting games like Street Fighter II , Mortal Kombat¸ Fatal Fury, King of fighters etc in the early 90s. However, this was not to redeem the fate of arcade games completely, as the growth in computers and video technology saw the emergence of new type of games, including PC games and games that ran on special consoles such as the Playstation, Gameboy and the X-box pushing arcade games into the sidelines, to almost the end of their existence.

Real Arcade Games

Real arcade games are very popular in the public places where people are likely to be waiting for something. They are a great way to kill time, and can be found in video arcades, restaurants, bowling alleys, college campuses, laundromats, movie theaters, supermarkets, shopping malls, airports and bars. Many people also choose to place real arcade games in their homes, so that they can entertain themselves as well as their guests at any time, in the comfort of the home.
Real coin-operated arcade games can be gumball vending machines, crane machines, jukeboxes, slot machines, touch screen machines and redemption ticket games. Pinball machines are also very popular in arcades, and have been for decades. Whether you are interested in a racing game, an electronic dart board, or whatever, you can find whatever you need in the market.
Owning these coin-operated arcade games provides people the opportunity to have their own full time business, and helps small business owners add to their income. These game machines also benefit the owners of restaurants, laundromats, or any business with walk-in clients. They lend a great helping hand in attracting customers, and in keeping customers onsite for longer periods of time.
There are places on the Internet which offer used and new real arcade game machines, like moneymachines.com. Vintagearcade.net offers a large selection of used classic and rare arcade game machines. You can also do a Google search of "Real Arcade Games" to find out what sites exist that might sell new and used video game consoles.

MAME Arcade Machines - Are They for the Purists

For the people that don't know what MAME is, it is an arcade emulator made for Microsoft Windows all the way back in 1997. In short, what it did was, to allow any PC owner to be able to play all those classic arcade video games from the past, right on their computer.
After MAME got really big for the PC, arcade cabinet makers decided that it would be a financially wise idea to use the MAME emulator on actual arcade cabinets. Of course, no matter how much fun the games might have been on the computer, it was a million times better on an arcade cabinet. There was no comparison when it came down to playing the game the way it was initially intended for. Playing Double Dragon on the PC just couldn't compete with that.
It was really the perfect idea. You're able to store thousands of games, if needed be, in one single cabinet. The sheer convenience plus the ability to save a whole bunch of money was just too much for gamers to say no to.
The real perk about MAME arcade machines it is that you don't need the newest, most expensive technology to create one. The internal computer doesn't have to be greatest, because the majority of the older arcade games were just not that demanding on memory.
Now, for the purists out there. I'm speaking about the ones that have been collecting arcade machines since they first hit the mainstream, MAME arcade machines are viewed as second rate. To the die hard purists, owning the original machine with its original artwork, buttons, joystick is the only way to collect arcade games.
Do they have a point? Absolutely, they do! No matter how great a MAME machine might be, there is still no substitute to the feeling you get when you see a basement full of old arcade games. MAME machine just can't compete with that site.
However, one thing is for certain: MAME arcade machines are here to stay and are a major part of this business/hobby.
What's your preference MAME machines or actually getting the old-school classic arcade cabinets? They both have there pros and cons. Check out ClassicArcadeStore.com and judge for yourself. You'll find thousands of listings on both MAME and classic arcade machines You be the judge!

Arcade Games - Who's Playing Them?

Arcade Games-Who's Playing Them?
When you think of Arcade Games, a picture of young children around the ages of 8 and up comes to my mind. Does it yours? Well, you're in for a surprise. How about a 35 year old woman? A 60 year old woman?
According to RealArcade, who is a leader in the Online Internet Arcade games, the demographic for their website are women from the age of 35 to the age of 60. They claim that 70% of their online players are in this group age category. It is difficult to bring the image to my mind of a 60 year old woman blasting away at a lineup of army tanks, and shooting down as many of them as she can within a certain limit of time.
Out of curiosity, I went into their site and they have a lot more than just "shoot 'em up" games. As a Senior Citizen myself, I soon found myself playing some of the games and enjoying them immensely. Maybe it isn't so outrageous after all. I actually enjoyed some of the "shoot-'em-up games, as well. They have all kinds of puzzling puzzler games and awesome action games. You also get a free present of a choice of two games in return for joining their 30 day-free trial. I think I'm going to sign up. Have I just become a statistic in the demographic of arcade games?
Talk about puzzling; I'm still agog over the demographic of woman between the ages of 35 and 60 being the dominant factor in the world of Arcade games. You'll find a RealArcade website at http://brandnameshoppingmall.com
